As one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world, TikTok is perhaps the most controversial. Owned by the Beijing-based company ByteDance, concerns have been raised in several countries that China uses the app to exert influence over billions of users, which could pose a national security threat due to China´s intelligence laws. In the US, President Joe Biden signed a bill in April 2024 that would require ByteDance to sell the social media platform or face a total ban in the United States. In India, TikTok has been banned since 2020. In the EU, the app is still available to millions of users as well as among several MPs in the European Parliament. This panel explores TikTok from three different perspectives, those of the US, India, and the EU.
